In this text the vacant lots and the old mattress are being compared. The vacant lots and torn down street are uncared for and abandoned. Personification is used with regard to the mattress. This gives the text a more human feel which is used to envoke emotion in the reader. This could represent the people that live on the street and how they too are old and have been left to endure the saddness and poverty of this abandoned steet.
