Satire
John Dryden introduced a more refined and intellectual approach to English satire, moving away from the coarser styles of earlier writers. His work often combined wit with moral and political commentary, using sophisticated language and structured forms. Dryden's satirical pieces, such as "Absalom and Achitophel," exemplify his blend of humor and serious critique, reflecting the complexities of his time. This shift laid the groundwork for future satirists, influencing the genre's evolution in English literature.
It set the model for English Odes to follow. The most famous being Wordsworth's "Ode on Intimations of Immortality."
Satire takes the shortcomings and wrongdoings of a subject and displays them in a way that criticizes but doesn't harm unjustly.
John Dryden
It is rumored that Howard Cogan did, but the earliest documentation of the phrase was found in an editorial written by Michael Connor. In the Fall of 1976, I (Bob Vanderbei) was a first year graduate student at Cornell. For Thanksgiving, I drove to Troy NY to spend the holiday weekend with my friends from RPI (my undergraduate college). When I got there, the first question one of my friends asked me was: How do you like Cornell? My response was: "Ithaca is gorgeous!" I did not realize I had made a pun. My friend (I think it was Bill Cocke) laughed. I asked what he was laughing about. He pointed out the pun. When I got back to Ithaca, I used the pun all of the time. In particular, I repeated it often at the college town book store located on the northeast corner of Dryden Rd and College Ave (can't remember the name of the store---it's not there anymore). Around 1979 or 1980, that store started selling "Ithaca is Gorges" t-shirts. I know of no earlier reference and have always assumed that my friend (Bill Cocke) first thought of the pun and that I popularized it on campus. I can't prove this. If anyone has a documentable reference prior to November, 1976, I'd like to hear about it.
William Congreve and John Dryden were both playwrights and poets. They were prominent figures in English literature during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, known for their works in the Restoration and Augustan periods. Congreve is best known for his comedies, while Dryden's works span various genres including poetry, drama, and critical essays.
Playwrights included John Gay, John Dryden, Royall Tyler and William Congreve. The Beggar's Opera by John Gay was probably the best known play in the eighteenth century.
This line from Dryden's poem "To My Dear Friend, Mr. Congreve" suggests that the poet is not only drawn to physical beauty but also to the inner qualities of a person, such as their character, intelligence, or personality. Dryden is emphasizing the importance of inner beauty over external appearances in forming a genuine connection with someone.
John Dryden was known as a prominent English poet. He was an exceedingly popular figure in restoration England, and wrote a variety of literary works.
John Dryden
Samuel Johnson referred to John Dryden as the father of English criticism. Dryden was a prominent poet, literary critic, and playwright during the Restoration period in England. His critical works greatly influenced the development of literary criticism in English literature.
The main idea of the excerpt from "An Essay on Dramatic Poesy" by John Dryden is to defend the English playwrights against the criticisms of French neoclassical dramatists. Dryden argues for the merits of English drama by comparing it favorably to French drama and emphasizing the importance of variety and creativity in theatrical works.
