I had been wondering about the answer to this question for years. In the 1970s I finally got my chance to ask someone who might know. I was at the post-Oscars party at the Beverly Hilton (how I got there is another story). George Burns separated briefly from the group he was with, and I quickly rueshed over to him and said, "Mr. Burns, I know that you know everything about the early days of vaudeville; who was the first person to do, "Slowly I Turn?" He thought for a minute, then said a name. I had to ask him to repeat it, and he said more distinctly, "Jim Barton." It wasn't until later that I figured out it was James Barton, American stage actor, star of the long-running "Tobacco Road," and later "Paint Your Wagon," who had gotten his start in vaudeville in the early 20th century.
