she broke the pot by goofing off so her little girl protected her by saying that she is the one who broke it because the father likes the little girl better so he would not punish her when he knows that he broke the pot. this proves that the African children like to play and be silly and goof around just like the other normal children.
When she was carrying the pot back from the river on top of her head, she started playing around, folding her arms in front of her and swaying her hips like a grown woman. The pot then fell down and broke.
