A and an are articles that are used before a noun. "A" goes with all words that begin with consonants, for example: "a cat," "a dog," "a big apple" with with one exception: Use an before unsounded h. ("An honest opinion"). "An" goes before all words that begin with vowels: "an ice cube," "an uprising," "an egg" with two exceptions: When u makes the same sound as the y in you, or o makes the same sound as w in won, then a is used. (ex. "a unicorn" or "a one-legged man".
