skimming means to read the first sentence of a pargraph which gives you the main idea of the whole paragraph, but skanning to move your eyes quikly across the lines to see if there is any similar word or phrase yoy can spot.

Read Across America was established in 1998 by the National Education Association as an annual reading motivation and awareness program that celebrates reading on March 2nd, which is Dr. Seuss's birthday.
It can be argued that Mark Twain was America's first national celebrity. Twain, Samuel Clemens, traveled across the country on the lecture circuit. His wit and humor made him a popular figure and his books were widely read.
