since can be a preposition, a subordinating conjunction and an adverb of length of time.

when referring to time since measures time from a point in the past up to now:

preposition - since 1984, since last year, since the cold war etc

conjunction - We have lived here since I was born, She has been away since losing her husband.

adverb - She wrote to me last years and I have had no news from her since then.

Since goes with perfect verb tenses
