RI think old England. "Dead ringer" from what i know was the term given to people who where buried alive by accident from drinking whisky from lead cups causing them to pass out for long periods of time. England being so small they where running out of grave yard space so they would dig up old coffins and discard old bones so they could reuse the coffins, in doing this they found that quite a few coffin lids had scratch marks on them from burying people by accident alive so they started to tie a string on the dead and ran it up out of the ground and attached a bell to it Hence the term "Dead inger"
