Holden decides to go back to his school, Pencey Prep. He decides he doesn't want to wait for Wednesday so that he will not get home before his parents get the Headmaster's letter of expulsion. Earlier in the novel, when he learned that he would be expelled, Holden expressed no sorrow about leaving the school, but now, he feels sadness. He feels as though he has hurt his mother and been left by his friends. He feels abandoned and alone as he walks out of the dorm.

The theme of alienation is pervasive in The Catcher in the Rye. This question is largely up to interpretation, but many critics believe that Holden is searching for peace and comfort in his life. This novel, in various ways, describes a teenager who struggles to accept the idea of change. This is why he questions the taxi drivers and countless people about ideas of change.

Holden feels alienated by his surroundings and leaves his school to find ways to feel as if he belongs in a society. Yet, Holden does not even know that he is searching for something. He is simply forced to act by the different pressures that exist and feels compelled to escape.

In short, Holden searches for peace and comfort and most importantly something or someone that will make him feel like he belongs.
