Psychological Terror
an important element was psychological terror
There are several elements that are prevalent in a gothic novel. The most obvious is dark settings and imagery, such as forests, dark lakes, nighttime settings, gloomy houses, thunderstorms, etc. One or more of the characters also reflect this darkness within their personality. The general atmosphere will usually be shrouded in suspense and mystery, and the reader will only be given information a bit at a time. Omens, visions, and prophecies may make an appearance, though they are not necessary. Emotions will run high, and characters will often be hiding secrets. A stereotypical element is that one of the characters is a woman in much distress.
The example I think of for gothic novels is Rebecca by de Maurier. The novel is set in the dark Manderly house by the sea, Mrs. Danvers is a secretive, ominous character who threatens the protagonist, the new Mrs. de Winter, all the time there exists a secret that lurks throughout the estate but that is not discovered until the end, and the emotional tension at times is almost tangible.
Common elements found within the Gothic novel are settings or a mood so dark , mysterious , atmospheric and brooding that the setting or background itself can be regarded as a character within the novel itself . Common themes in Gothic works are elements of the dark side of human nature .
