NO one believes me, but I said it first in 1982. I started the whole revolution and it drives me crazy that there is this "infamous" phrase that caught on like wildfire out there to which, when it comes up in conversation and I tell my story that I started it, everyone laughs. Well, as with everything, phrases, comical antidotes, even jokes, they have to start somewhere and "Get a Life" "got its life" at Burnsville Threatre, Burnsville, Minnesota by me, Angela Schuller (back then I was Angela Rekdal). I was in 11th grade.
I'm a very easy-going person with a good sense of humor. I had a friend, Bob Dix (yes, that part of the story is true too!) We worked together at the movie theatre, he was an usher, I was a candy girl. I was always giving him carp (uh, that's myslang for crap, you say Holy Crap! I say Holy Carp!) So one day we were up to our usual banter, he said something to me and I said, "Bob?" Then I paused and said "Get a life!" It just came to me. Well, this other usher guy named Mike who was hanging letters on the marque heard it and cracked up. We all did. It was damn funny!
The next day at Burnsville High School, I hear this Mike character announce to someone in the hallway between classes, "Hey! Get a life!" Right there I was like, what the fragglerock??? that's my saying! (Yes, it's true. I have said fragglerock for the "f" word for quite some time now. No one in this generation even knows what Fragglerock is!! WHATEVER!) Anyway, back to "Get a LIfe"... After that day in school, the next thing I know the entireplanet is saying it.
So there you have it. Who said "Get a Life" first? I DID.
I told my kids that the other day. It came up because my oldest daughter who is 18, said to me, "Hey, mom, you know how you always say "fragglerock" for the "f" word? Well I just hear it used that way in a movie!" Once again my jaw dropped. And I said, "That's the 2nd time in my life my phrase gets stolen!" My younger daughter asked what did I mean. Well, I told her "I can't tell you because you'll just laugh and you won't believe me" But I told anyway.
And my kids all laughed. And I told them, "Someday, when I go to heaven God's going to give me affirmation, he'll turn to me and say, 'Yes, Angela, you DID start "Get a Life"'." And do you know what my 12 year old daughter said to me????
Which is proof that humor runs in the family. She said, "No, Mom, that's when God's going to tell you the truth!"
