Symbols are what we use everyday even if we don't know it. You see symbols when you drive, when you're at school and even at home. Symbols make things easier to understand especially when you're reading a map. On a map there are lots of different symbols. For example, if there's a church, they don't write 'CHURCH', instead they put a cross to indicate there's a church. But sometimes it's hard to remember all of the symbols so sometimes they use colours. Areas with trees are coloured in green and lakes, rivers and oceans are coloured in blue.

What is the definition of symbolism?

1. The practice of representing things by symbols, marks or designs. All words are symbolic, as are mathematical symbols. Corporate logos, religious or ideological symbols all are symbols of this type. 2. The use of words or ideas or stories to evoke a broader concept in literature. This can include metaphors, allegories or the repetition of motifs. Since these are rarely explicit, readers may find symbolism in works of literature, songs, poetry or religious material which was not necessarily intended by the author but nevertheless makes for an interesting observation and deeper understanding of the work. Some people like Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell believe that we cannot help but include such symbolism in stories whether we intend to or not.
