He stole them because he was angry and upset over being sent away to boarding school. He was a very private person and liked to be in control, but when he's sent away to school and becomes the victim of a bully, he is none too happy with his parents, and his elder brother. He steals the books to have a secret, something he is in control of, becuase he has nothing else. It made him feel better to see the books becuase it reminded him that he has something no one knows about. His parents don't really care about him; his elder brother is living his own life, and now he wants to take something back for himslef. The books are just symbolic of what he's lost; that's why in the end he is so upset that Nicky Carver claims he was the one who stole the books and is believed. Nicky stole his secret and now he doesn't have anything again. It's a sad statement about what parents and schools do to kids. (and I'm a parent and a teacher)
