In my opinion, the reason that Yeats refers to noon as a purple glow in "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" is because it suggests a very warm and comforting image, solidifying the picture that Yeats is trying to paint. In addition, the fact that the colour is purple could mean a variety of things: It could be referring to purple flowers (such as heather) that are glowing in the noon light, creating a very calming image; or it could refer to the fact that the colour purple has connotations of royalty, and therefore Yeats is suggesting the richness and comfort of this picturesque location. Indeed, it could be both of those interpretations, or even none of them.

The purple glow is heather. I studied and taught Yeats at Harvard for many years. Yeats was walking down Fleet Street on a cold, gray London day when he had a sudden memory from childhood. Childhood images are simple and real. Not the specious sophomoric blather that abounds describing this unreal noon light.
