Euclid from ancient Greece is given credit as being the Father of Geometry. He developed a concept of point, line and plane and then a set of postulates about them, such as 2 points determine a line and 3 non-collinear point determine a plane. From these, Euclid proposed theorems with proofs. Other mathematicians built on his work and contributed their theorems.

"Geo" refers to the earth. (like in "geography")
"Metria" refers to measuring things. (like in "metric")
"Geo" plus "Metria" means "earth measurement" or "land measurement". It was studied and
developed for the purpose of accurate measurement of pieces of land, i.e. surveying, to determine
exactly where the boundary line is between my field and your field, so that neither of us would
wind up trying to sell the crops that the other of us grew, and when my sons inherited my land,
there would be no question about exactly how much of it there is, and where the boundaries are.
The root word is "metric", which is related to "measurement".
"geo" is a prefix here, or a second root word, just as "geo" is one of these in "geography", "geology", "geophysics", and "geostationary".
