Sentences written in the active voice are more direct and concise. They tend to be easier to read and livlier. In contrast, sentences written in the passive voice can sound dull, dry, and stuffy. If you want your writing to interest and engage readers, you should try to use the active voice more than the passive voice.

Does the sentence The rain continued until dawn use the passive voice?

What is the meaning of active and passive voice?

The Active voice is when the subject of a sentence performs the action:eg The boy broke the window. The Passive voice is when the subject of a sentence is acted upon:eg The window was broken by the boy.Understanding the Active and The Passive VoiceWho or what does the action? The subject always does the action in the active voice but does not perform the action in the passive voice! The passive voice swaps the subject of a sentence in its active voice with the object of the same sentence by using any form of the auxiliary verb 'to be' along with the past participle of the main verb. This action causes the original subject of the sentence which heretofore had performed the action to be inactive and non dependent on the active verb and so it becomes passive. That is why it is called passive.Example.The sheep drank water from the trough. This sentence is active. Why? because the sheep performed the action. Sheep, by the way is both a singular and a plural noun .The sheep (subject) drank (main verb) water (object noun) from the (preposition) trough (place noun). Now let's make it passive:The water was drunk from the trough by the sheep. This sentence is passive. Why? Because the water is the subject of interest. The water is more important to our story than the sheep. The water (subject) was (past tense simple form of the auxiliary verb 'to be') drunk (past participle of the main verb) from the trough ( no change) by(preposition) the sheep (object)..You can see that the active voice is understood more clearly than the passive voice. It is therefore used mostly by writers and public speakers. However, we ourselves use the passive voice often without realizing it. In general the passive voice is employed for the purpose of avoiding over emphasis on anything personal. For example, 'The news is broadcast on the radio at 6pm everyday'. (This is passive) 'Everyday, the radio broadcasts the news at 6pm'. (This is active), but you can see that in this case and cases like this, the passive voice is clearer than the active voice. That is why it is important to know the right time to use it and this comes with practice.

Why should you generally use active voice rather than passive in your writing?

because active voice is more direct than passive voice and is easier understood. Given the short memory span of the listener / reader it is easier to see the whole picture when active voice is used. Likewise, active sentences are more cohesive. For example: Mom is cooking pasta (main thought: mom is cooking, natural question is what? which is immediately answered by the word pasta as against Pasta is being cooked by mom. (the main thought becomes Pasta is being cooked and the natural question of course will be so what? and not by whom the phrase by mom then somehow loses its relevance)

How do you rephrase In addition it should be emphasized that?

To change the verb to active voice, you would say "In addition, I [or other subject] emphasize". To remove the preceeding prepositional phrase, you would say "it should additionally be emphasized that". If you want a synonymous phrase, you could use "Concurrantly, it is important to note that".

What is active voice to passive voice and vice versa?

Active voice: "John attended school." Passive voice: "The school was attended by John." Passive voice: "Jane was helped by John." Active voice: "John helped Jane." In active voice, the subject of the sentence usually comes first and is doing the action to something else. In passive voice, the predicate is being acted upon by the subject. Passive voice tends to be harder to read , and it tends to use more words. So for the most part, you should avoid using passive voice.

When writing radio news you should use what voice?

Active voice, third person, short simple declarative sentences, elementary school vocabulary as far as possible.

Why do writers often strive to write using more active-voice verbs and fewer passive-voice vers?

Writers often prefer to use active-voice because it makes the sentence more engaging for the reader. It describes someone or something doing something, as opposed to something just being done. Active voice is occasionally the only way a sentence may be constructed. Also, passive voice often makes sentences abnormally difficult to construct and read. For example: active: Fish live in the sea. passive: no passive voice version because there is no subject. Fish live + (preposition)... you can't construct a passive equivalency. active: I drove my car today! passive: My car was driven by me today! The passive voice makes the sentence very unwieldy, requiring a helping verb (was) not required in the active voice sentence. It adds extra words, and focuses on the object being acted upon, rather than whoever is performing the action.
