In our area a sqeeze of hay can be anywhere from 50 to 64 bales......depending on how much they weigh....weight is a big factor when calculating cost per bale and number of bales on a per ton basis.....

This can vary greatly because hay bales can be formed in many different sizes, there is no 'standard' size. It also varies due to the fact you failed to identify whether you are referring to large or small square bales or large or small round bales.

A round bale weighs anything from 700 to 2000 pounds on average in the USA. A small square bale weighs from 40 to 100 pounds and large square bales weigh from 140 to 2000 pounds depending on how they were baled. So a 700 pound round bale could contain 17.5 small 40 pound bales or 5 of the 140 lb large squares. A 2000 lb round bale could contain 50 of the small 40 lb bales, 14.3 of the 140 lb bales, or one of the 2000 lb bales.

Comparing volumes of hay will give similarly large ranges.

Some examples of modern baling equipment:

  • The John Deere model 348 (square baler) forms a bale that is 14 inches wide by 18 inches high, with length that can be varied from 12 inches to 50 inches. Therefore a bale formed on this machine ranges from 2 cubic feet to 7 cubic feet.
  • The John Deere model 568 (round baler) forms a bale that is 62 inches wide, with a diameter that can be varied from 32 inches to 72 inches. Therefore a bale formed on this machine ranges from 29 cubic feet to 146 cubic feet.
  • The New Holland model BB9080 (large square baler) forms a bale that is 47.3 inches wide by 35.4 inches wide, with length varying from 54 inches to 102.3 inches. Therefore a bale formed on this machine ranges from 52 cubic feet to 99 cubic feet.

The maximum size round bale is about 20 times the size of the maximum small square bale, but only 1.5 time the size of the maximum large square bale.

A common size for small square bales is 14 x 18 x 36 inches. This is 5 1/4 cubic feet. Therefore, the round baler could form bales 28 times larger.

The amount of land that takes to put up one bale of hay is based on a number of factors: the amount of rain, the amount of sun, or the type of grass or alfalfa. It can also depend on whether the hay has been fertilized or not. It is not an answer to be given without knowing more information.

Standard block has 84 three twine bales at approximately 100lbs each. Blocks will have different bale counts with different sized bales.

There are 64 bales in a normal squeeze. an average bale weighs 100 pounds. So that's 3.2 tons. Dr. Hay
