Hernan Cortes led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire in 1521 which was the key event in the formation of New Spain (Mexico). He led an army that included 400 soldiers and 16 horses.
An army of Spaniard's.
Cortes intorduced horses to the New World.
If you are referring to Hernan Cortés' army, that defeated the Aztec empire, they were (when they arrived to Yucatan for the first time) about 600 men, 16 horses and 14 cannons. Some time after this arrival, a new group of Spanish soldiers with orders from Cuba´s Governor to capture Cortes, arrived. After being defeated by Cortes and their leader executed, these men joined Cortes' army. Francisco Pirazzo had 110 foot men 67 cavalry and one small cannon. He tricked the Incas into thinking he was letting the Sapa Inca go when really he was planning another ambush.

When Hernan Cortes first arrived in Tenochtitlan in 1519, Moctezuma, the ruler of the Aztecs, agreed to let Cortes stay. However, a year later, in 1520, the Aztecs rose and threw Cortes out of the city. Later on, Moctezuma was killed, most probably by the Aztecs. Later on, in 1521, Cortes came back with his army, and he defeated the Aztecs with the help of: Metal armor Smallpox (people think that more than 1,000 Aztecs died because of Smallpox) Muskets Horses (the Aztecs had never seen horses before, and they got frightened) Allies
8,000 warriors not counting the horses and carriages.
