This is one of my favorite stories. I found it in Folk and Fairy Tales of Far-Off Lands Edited by Eric and Nancy Protter (c) 1965 Eric Protter Duell, Sloan & Pearce - Meredith Press. It is very similar, overall, to "The Ebony Horse" in the 1001 nights. I took my favorite elements of both stories and combined them for my own telling version. "The Ebony Horse" is also included in another Arab collection called 101 nights, which has been translated into German and published in 2010. I have been trying to find out whether the Chinese story is a source of the Arab tale or the other way around.
