What are eppalettes?

A eppalette is the shoulder strap worn on uniforms. They rank worn on eppalettes are usually of officers, and enlisted men on the sleeves. In Germany Sergeants ranks are also on the epalettes, and only corprals and lesser ranks have sleeve rank.
