'La galette des Rois' is special kind of cake eaten at the Epiphany, at the end of the season of Christmas. Inside there is a fève (literally a bean) usually in ceramic in the shape of something. One of the children present goes under the table, so they can't see who is being served, and calls out the names of those seated around the table to be served a piece of the cake. The one who finds the trinket in his or her piece of cake is given a cardboard crown, and has to name someone else their 'king' or their 'queen'. The Kings are a reference to the three Magi or Wise Men who came to Bethlehem. In French they are known as 'les Rois Mages'. Twelfth Night is called 'la Nuit des Rois'.

What do French people do on the 6th January?

Salut: January 6, which is 12 days after Christmas in the Gregorian calendar, is, not only the end of the Christmas holidays, but also the start of Carnivale which ends in some countries with Mardi Gras.In France, Le Jour des Rois (the Day of Kings), sometimes called Le Fête des Rois, is celebrated with parties. The gallete des rois, or "cake of kings" (for the 3 wise men of the bible), highlights the celebrations. This cake is round and flat and covered with a white napkin when brought into the room (although, I must admit, I do not know, or perhaps remember, why).
