During the Pleistocene Era, the equines native to the Americas (Equus ferus) apparently died out. This was paralleled by similar loss of wild populations worldwide. Following this extinction about 10,000 to 12,500 years ago, there were no species of horses in the Americas until the Spanish re-introduced them during the early 1500's.
