What was Sally Ride famous for?

Sally Ride was the first American woman in space (the third woman as there were two female Soviet cosmonauts prior to her flight). She flew aboard the space shuttle Challenger on the STS-7 flight as a mission specialist, and was in orbit from June 18 to June 24, 1983. She flew a second mission, STS-41G, in 1984, along with a second female astronaut, Kathryn Sullivan.
