This is usually fixable by removing the cluster and resoldering the connector pins. Over time, vibration and/or hooking/unhooking the harness to cluster causes the solder joints around the pins to crack creating a poor connection. If you look at the base of the pins there will be a little circle around the base in the solder. Simply use a soldering gun to heat the solder until it melts to re-establish good connections. You won't need to add any solder just touch the base with a soldering iron until it melts and then remove the soldering iron. Do all the pins while you are at it or you are at it or other problems may pop up later. I changed some burned out instrument bulbs as I have done in several of my other VW's and then the gauge cluster would intermittently stop working, then work again. On another VW i had a coolant level light that would intermittently come on and drove me crazy because i had changed all the sensors and the level was good. In both cases after resoldering the connector pins the problem went away. All the blogs said the cluster was bad. Worst case scenario is you mess up your cluster in the soldering operation and you still need a cluster, so try this fix first. Any used cluster is at the same age and probably also have the cracked pins! Sad to see in the blogs how many clusters have probably been unnecessarily changed out when the pin resoldering may have solved the problems and the headaches...
because they are broken.
Replace the dash cluster that's what it sounds like to me since your tachometer and speedometer both don't work
you need to replace the gauges
Check VSS variable speed sensor that is mounted on transmission
Yes. Since your dealing with MKIII's here (1993-1999.5) the parts will work.
I own a 1995 jetta and do all of my own work on it. It takes four quarts when doing an oil change. Run the car for about 15 minutes you may or may not have to add 1/4 quart
Its the fuse and if not its the fuse Boxs. by the cluch or brake peddle.
The Mazda tachometer and the speedometer have separate cables. The tachometer cable probably does not work properly. Change the tachometer cable.
it sure would work.. behind the dashboard are plugs for each function. one for tachometer, one for speedometer, fuel, water temp. ect.. if your new dash doesn't have a tachometer it will not interfere with the speedomet aspect of it. but you will not have a tach obviously. that sucks kid
One possibility is that the tachometer connections to the circuit board of the cluster have become corroded. It is also possible that the tachometer has just become worn out and needs to be replaced.
yes
rev counter not working
