If the charged battery tests out at 12.6v and is fairly new, then your charging system might be screwed up. Keep the jumper cables in the car and don't stop until you get it to where it can be fixed. Battery is located in the trunk, under the tray on the right side. It most likely is a wierd long skinny maintence-free battery. [BTW-Some Z4's have two batteries!]. Convertibles get a special vibration-resistant battery that must be replaced like-for-like.
