remove the heater unit and heater matrix to acess the evaporator. separate the blower motor housing from the heater.remove the 2 clips at the front of the heater. remove the small clips between the blower housing and the heater housing.remove the temperature flap link rod.remove the 16 clips that holds the uper and lower halves of the heater unit together. remove the 3 screws that secures the top half of heater unit( 1 behind each vent a 1 above the vent outlet and 1 above the pipe connection). lift the top half of the heater unit lift out the evaporator.
No the evaporator can NOT be accessed from the firewall, the only way to access the evap is to remove the dash. you can get to the expansion valve at the firewall though and replace that and the seals. But that is the only thing you can get to at the firewall. hope that helps.
