From a former owner of several BMWs: take it to a mechanic. If you blow your TB, your whole engine is ruine. Last time I had a TB changed (5 yrs. ago?) I think it was $850 and my belt was indeed cracked (beemers have rubber TBs), so I saved probably $2500 or more by paying for it to be done. Besides, almost noone can work on beemers anymore but a mechanic, especially newer ones, like a '92.
