Removing the shift knob is actually very simple if you have the Volvo "Spaceball" setup: Just push down on the knob and rotate it counter clockwise about 90degrees then pull up to remove the knob from the shaft. Depending on what type of shift knob you are replacing it with, installation of the new one may differ. See: http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?136135
To change the gear shift light bulb on a 2007 Toyota Matrix, first, ensure the vehicle is in park and turn off the ignition. Remove the gear shift knob by pulling it straight up or unscrewing it, depending on the type. Next, carefully detach the surrounding trim panel to access the bulb socket, then twist the socket counterclockwise to remove it. Replace the old bulb with a new one, reassemble the trim and gear shift knob, and test the light to ensure it's functioning.
