You should be able to unscrew the shift knob itself. Just turn it counter-clockwise until it gets lose; finally, remove it. You should remove the plastic shift knob plate after unscrewing the knob. What you remove should resemble the shift knob u are using to replace it with. If not, then I'm sorry, I don't have the answer you need.
If so, just screw on the new shift knob until it is tight and in the correct direction. Snap the new shift knob plate in to place.. go test it

Ummm do you even own a VW????? I didn't think so. The shifter knobs in volkswagens DON"T unscrew, they have a clip you have to remove, then you can just lift it off. Where did you even get your info from????? i would really like to know.
