If you want to do this yourself purchase the Haynes or Bentley manual for your car. Haynes and Bentley produce excellent manuals that others cannot compare to. Chiltons manuals are useless do not waste your $$$

To change the air filter on the 2002 VW Beetle, just remove the air breather cover by unscrewing the center nut. Then, remove the filter and add the new filter in its place. Place the cover back over the filter and replace the nut.

You don't. It does have a strainer inside the transmission that is permanent.
If you are referring to the oil filter, the answer is NO! The oil filter is not located inside the oil pan. If you are talking about the transmission filter, the answer is Yes. The transmission pan must be removed the change the A/T filter.

The filter is located behind the torque converter in the Lancer. Changing the filter is a long process and is recommended only if there is an issue with the transmission.
All there is to do is to change the fluid and the filter.
