There is no way to check the gear oil other than draining it and putting new oil in. Quadracers don't have a dipstick, just a oil cap.
You need to include a model. It's not going to be the same for a Volvo car as it is for a Volvo semi truck.

Sounds like your transmission fluid may be low. On the 2006 I don't think there is a dipstick to check it but the dealer or any of the lube oil places should be able to check it for you.
There are usually no lights or meter for gear oil. In old automatic gear boxes you have a dip stick to check the oil levels. New automatic gear boxes can be a sealed unit, and manual gear boxes you have to open the drain plug, and replace the oil.
