To fix a door latch already in the locked position, first you pick the lock. Actually you many not need to do that unless there is only one door into the room. What you will do will depend on the type of lock. If the lock is in the door handle, there may be a small rectangular indentation underneath the door handle. If there is, put a small screw driver in it and take push it in. While it is pushed in pull out the door handle. You will then see the unit that goes into the hole in the door jam. It will have a place that you can pull back with a screwdriver. Pull it back and then you should be able to open the door. If the lock is one that will not work and you are inside. There should be some screws in the lock itself that you can unscrew and do the same thing. There are also solvents available at hardware stores that you can squirt into difficult locks that will let them open with a key.
The door latch may be stuck in the locked position due to a mechanical issue, such as a misalignment of the latch mechanism or a broken component. It could also be caused by debris or dirt obstructing the latch from moving freely.
sounds like the release mechanism is sticking, try spaying WD-40 in the latch, (on the door) where the door closes . It's also possible that your door latch is already in the locked position.

Open the handle while pushing the inner workings of the latch open.
The door latch and rods should already be in place BEFORE mounting the window and lock guts into the door. If the latch is secured correctly, and the rods in the proper position, connecting them to the door guts is common sense business.
door latch boken will not open.

Remove the lock and fit another one. Once you remove the handles and driveshaft it will be apparent how to remove the latch mechanism.
If it has power door locks it's in the power door lock asm. It is activated when the latch moves to the locked position. Just removed mine to replace the switch so still on the bench.
To match the latch and strike plate on a new door, first install the latch on the door edge, ensuring it is level and aligned with the door frame. Close the door to mark the position of the latch on the strike plate, which should align with the latch when the door is shut. Then, position the strike plate on the door frame so that it properly receives the latch when the door is closed, and secure it in place. Finally, test the door to ensure it latches smoothly and adjust as necessary.

Is it the lock button on top of the door or the latch that holds the door shut? If its the latch just pull door handle then flick catch back round with a screwdriver. Its a C lock that spins round when door shuts locking the door in place, when handle is pulled, the C lock is released and spins back with the effort of the door opening. Hope this helps
