Usually the key FOB has a trunk latch, but if the battery runs out or you don't have a key FOB, check next to the drivers door, next to the gas release lever, there should be a trunk release lever.

To open the trunk on a 1971 VW beetle, there is a little handle in the glove compartment which must be pulled toward the passenger seat to allow you to pop the trunk open. Pull the lever and then push the button on the trunk (hood). It should open right up. If the lever in the glove box is broken, you'll have to use a pair of pliers to pull the cable that unlocks the trunk. Good Luck...
To access the spare tire in a 1971 VW Super Beetle, first open the front trunk by releasing the latch from inside the car. Once the trunk is open, you'll see the spare tire situated on the trunk floor, secured with a metal hold-down bracket. To remove the tire, unfasten the bracket using a wrench or your hands, and then lift the tire out of the trunk area. Be cautious of any tools or equipment that may also be stored in the trunk.
