To remove the battery on a SL 500,
(I just did mine, its a 92 SL 500) the battery is in the trunk on the passenger side below the carpet trim on the side of the wall. You remove the carpeted cover panel, I believe it has a little clip screw you have to pull out.
Once you have the cover off, unscrewing the bolts on the cable ends is a bummer. You can not use vise grips, monkey wrenchs etc, it has to be the round end of an Allen wrench for the negative side and for the positive side I actually had to pry the end up and off the battery lead with a long screwdriver wedged in between the battery and the cable end. Also you need a wratchet to unscrew the plate that's bolted next to the battery in the well there. That holds the battery in place.
Hope this helps
To change the gas tank on a 1992 Mercedes 500SL, first ensure the vehicle is securely lifted and supported. Disconnect the battery, then remove the fuel lines and electrical connections from the tank. Unbolt the tank from its mounting points and carefully lower it out of the vehicle. Install the new tank by reversing the process, ensuring all connections are secure before reconnecting the battery and testing for leaks.

To jump start a 1997 Mercedes 500SL, first ensure both vehicles are turned off. Connect the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the other end to the positive terminal of the working battery. Then, connect the black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the working battery and attach the other end to a grounded metal surface on the dead vehicle, away from the battery. Start the working vehicle, let it run for a few minutes, and then attempt to start the 500SL.
To replace the ignition lock cylinder in a 1991 Mercedes 500SL, first disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Remove the steering column cover by unscrewing the necessary screws, then turn the ignition key to the "ON" position to release the lock cylinder. Once released, pull out the old cylinder and insert the new one in its place, ensuring it clicks into position. Finally, reassemble the steering column cover and reconnect the battery.
You are in big trouble if no one has expained to you where the battery is and a myriad of other features that are somewhat strange on a Mercedes SL500. Try the trunk under the floor mat.
