To remove a automatic shift knob in mk4 jetta or gulf
.you need to make sure the shifter is all the way down in 2nd gear.
.After the shifter is down you need to pull the button off. You may have to pull hard but dont worry you wont break it. (if it were an egg on its side, grab what would be the top and bottom of the egg if that helps)
.once the button is off, there is an internal piece that will be exposed. you must pull that piece out also. use pliers if you cant grip it with our fingers.
.now with a knife or a firm grip pull the chrome piece at the base of the shift knob down.
.after that the shift knob should slide right up.
