Depends upon the year -- however if you have a 2001 range E320, it's in a surprising place - under the rear seat in the passenger compartment !
If you feel around under the rear seat cushion front edge close to the left and right door (kinda where the back of your knee would be on the right and left side by the doors) you'll feel an indentation and a button where you can push up.
Pushing up on the buttons on both sides pops up the rear seat cushion and if you lift that and some insulation, you'll find the battery compartment under the right passenger seat.
You'll need some tools to loosen the bracket holding the battery in place if you are changing that.
