On Passat's 07-09 you need to remove the in dash radio, this can be done by removing the aluminum trim around the console. You must then remove the radio unit using a t20 wrench. After removing the radio unit, underneath the vents, in now empty dash are 2 more t20 screws you will need to remove those as well. using a flat head screw driver or trim removal tool, wedge the flat head between the vents and rubber trim (Like you would remove the radio Trim) the vent should slide out. Careful as the vents are tied to the hazard lights and must be disconnected to successfully pull out the vents.
