Most VW's have their pannels attached with screws located 3 on the bottom lip,1 on the front by the side mirror and about 2 on the open side by the lock. Start from there and perhaps you will see how the rest comes appart.

Using a screw driver, remove the screws and remove the clips from the door panel. Remove the panel slowly, remove any wire connections, and pull the panel off the door frame.
Remove all screws and very very carefully slide the screw driver behind the panel and pull out.
ECM is located on drivers side, below the base of the windshield underneath the plenum. You have to remove plenum panel for access.
