"somewhat simple you locate it (should be on backside of engine) next to the firewall on the transmission then you take the wires off it (there is a nut holding them on) there are two or three bolts holding the starter on take starter out and do instructions in reverse"
right!.. bearing in mind that there are a couple different styles of brackets and heat shields you may encounter on your way to the starter mounting bolts...
Specifically for the automatic
Jack up your car and rest on jackstands... never work under a car supported only by a hydraulic jack.. use jack stands or ramps or blocks or something. don't wear your car as a hat!! Disconnect battery negative cable.. starter takes lots of amps.. more than enough to hurt you!!
The starter is found immediately behind the pass. side drive axle inboard end. under your car looking at the back of the block between motor and firewall
first remove the 10mm nuts retaining the heat shield.. then the 13mm bolts holding the bracket,..
loosen the large hose-style clamp (if so equipped) with a screwdriver and remove heat shield and bracket.
Unplug the one cable,.. and use a 13mm deep socket to remove the nut on the 2nd cable.
The starter is mounted by three 13mm bolts to the transmission but only two are visible. The third is accessible by about 10 inches of extension bar on your socket driver slipped in behind the solenoid assembly with the driver handle pointed upwards, you'll have to feel back there more than look to get your driver on but there is enough clearance to turn it out.
installation is reverse of removal. to aid in insertion of the third hard to reach bolt,.. thread the first two bolts in 3-4 turns to line up the holes and then begin to turn in the third with your fingers or just the extensions without the wratchet attached.
just finished doing this right now and thought it may help someone else out someday.
for the manual transmission,.. the starter is on the front of the block and very easily removed. this one's described in both the haynes and bentley books quite well.
it on the starter
Front of the transmition
