I will assume the heads, pistons, and cylinders are off.
take off the flywheel, the crank pulley, the oil sump plate, and the oil pump - four nuts and it pulls out.
Find all of the 8mm bolts and nuts (13mm wrench size) nand remove.

Take the big nuts off the six studs protruding from the case.

Now look again for any more bolts you may have missed.

You might need to gently use a rubber hammer to get the sealant to release between the case halves, or even a wooden block. But if the case seems stuck, look for more bolts!

A stand really helps for this. But when the case comes apart, you want the side with the big nuts up, and you can expect the valve lifters on this side to fall into the other side of the engine (no big deal, but if they hit the concrete, they are probably junk.)

This is not any harder than tearing down the top of the engine. Just go slow, look for more bolts, don't pry on anything, and you'll be fine.

Will 1978 vw bus case fit 1966 vw bug?

Engine case? The engine for the 78 bus is what is referred to as the Type 4 engine, which is vastly different from the Type 1 engine case used stock in the 1966 bug.It would require a lot of fabrication to fit this Type 4 engine in a Type 1 Beetle, but it has been done.

What should you use to seal the engine case when rebuilding a 1976 1500 engine?

Are you talking about the halves of a VW 1500 CC air cooled? If so, have everything ready, then use a good quality silicone gasket sealing material. You only have a short period of work time, so act quickly. BTW, if it's a VW, did you align bore the block, recondition the rods (big and little ends) and replace the exhaust valves? Also, don't just replace rings since the top groove often gives out when VW pistons are re-used. Pistons and cylinders are quite inexpensive when you consider the fact that you effectively have a new engine. You should also make sure you replaced the oil pump. Sorry, I do go on too much. No, no! Never use silicone gasket sealing material to glue a VW case back together. It's too thick, and screws up your main and cam bearing clearances. The official VW-recommended product is VW Case Glue. As you'd expect, VW stopped selling VW Case Glue when they quit selling the cars that need it. However...motorcycle companies didn't quit selling aircooled motorcycles, and their engine cases are glued together too. What you should use is Yamabond 5, from any Yamaha dealer. There are several types of Yamabond; Yamabond 5 is the right stuff for you. You can also use Hondabond HT from a Honda motorcycle dealer.

What year is vw engine number AS41?

the AS engine could be from a number of years I'm afraid- it's a 1600 from August 1973 to the end of production- 1979 i think.AnswerAS41 isn't an engine number. It's the magnesium alloy your engine case was cast from. Volkswagen changed to the improved AS21 alloy in 1975--it was introduced when VW put fuel injection on the Bug engine. So...if you've got an AS41 case, it could have come out of just about any year car.

How do you remove the distributor gear with out the puller on a VW air cooled engine?

You can't do it, unless you want to pull the engine and split the case. The puller is the only way to grab the drive pinion.
