VW has a specialized tool for this. Some folks have put pictures up on the internet of a home made tool that can do the job . (yahoo groups 93 eurovan has one in their archive.) I ended up using an adjustable wrench, a 12" crescent wrench was able to grip onto the arm, move it while I slid the belt off a pully. Danger/Caution The spring is strong. You may want to move and hold the arm a few times before removing the belt. Don't get you fingers caught.
