I bought a 1992 300SL and the seats were so hard that I thought something was wrong. So I went to a showroom and sat in the seat of a 1998 500SL, same hard seats. To remedy the problem I had my upholstery specialist take my seats apart and replace the German horsehair/hard rubber fabric with modern foam rubber. The seats are much more comfortable now but not as comfortable as my Volvo. The Volvo also has cup holders, the Mercedes does not, which helps understand the hard seats.

You need to go to an upholsterer...you have to buy the top, and then pay for them to install it. This is pretty much an all day event and can cost anywhere from $750.00 to $2,000.00 at the dealers...avoid the dealers...they just send them out to local upholstery shops and mark up the cost. Or, if you just want to take the hard top off, and use the convertible top..remove the hard top and pop up the boot cover. Now, if you''re talking about a 2003 and later 500sl...and you can't find the soft top, that's because there isn't one...all there is back there is a fold down hard top that fits into the trunk.
