To retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from a 1998 BMW 528i, you'll need an OBD-II scanner compatible with BMW or the proprietary BMW diagnostic tool. Once connected, you can read the codes by following the prompts on the scanner. To reset the codes, you can either clear them using the scanner or disconnect the car’s battery for about 15 minutes. However, be aware that disconnecting the battery may also reset other systems and settings in the vehicle.
On a 1998 BMW 528i, the brake fluid reservoir is located on the driver's side of the engine bay, near the back of the engine compartment. It is typically a translucent plastic container with a cap labeled for brake fluid. To check or add brake fluid, make sure the engine is off and allow the engine to cool down before opening the reservoir.

Disconnecting the battery may reset the ABS light on your 1998 BMW 528i temporarily, but it won't necessarily fix the underlying issue that triggered the light. The ABS light indicates a problem with the anti-lock braking system, and simply resetting it won't address any faults in the components or sensors. It's best to diagnose the problem using a scan tool to read the error codes before disconnecting the battery.

On a 1998 BMW 528i, the O2 (oxygen) sensors are located in two places: one is upstream (pre-catalytic converter) and the other is downstream (post-catalytic converter). The upstream sensor is typically found in the exhaust manifold or just before the catalytic converter, while the downstream sensor is located after the catalytic converter in the exhaust system. To access them, you may need to lift the vehicle and work from underneath or remove some engine covers. Always ensure the engine is cool before attempting any maintenance.
