First, centre the steering wheel. and make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

Disconnect the negative (-) terminal on the battery, and cover the terminal (in the trunk) with something plastic or rubber that will stop it making a connection to the body, and setting off the airbags.

If you have a 3 spoke steering wheel, behind the 2 upper spokes there is a Torx Screw that holds the airbag in place in the wheel.

Use a male T30 Torx screw driver, and remove the 2 screws.

Lift out the airbag module, and store in a safe place. Store the airbag with the black cover uppermost (BMW badge up) and the base on the ground. If the airbag should somehow detonate, no-one will be injured by the metallic base hitting them in the head!!!

On re-assembly, make sure that the locking pin on the steering column aligns with the matching cut-out in the airbag cut-out reel. This important pin location allows the steering wheel to rotate and maintain constant electrical contact with the steering column.
