The manual just shows a small fuzzy picture of a screwdriver being placed into an area near the cover and an arrow indicating a motion of pushing down on the handle. I did this and promptly broke the plastic cover clip off the cover assembly. Apparently what you need to do it push the slimmest screwdriver you have into the slot hard enough to to disengage the clip, and then pull back on the top of the cover to tilt it back and away from the light assembly. This will probably require a good tug, since the screwdriver will be jammed between the clip and the catch, creating a lot of friction.
The plastic is really brittle so you will have to be really careful to avoid doing what I did and breaking the cover. I am relying on duck tape to hold in on for the moment.

To remove the outer headlight lens on a BMW X5, first, ensure the vehicle is turned off and the headlights are cool. Carefully detach any clips or screws securing the headlight assembly, which may be located at the top or sides of the assembly. Once the assembly is loose, gently pull it forward to access the lens. If you're aiming to replace or clean the lens, you may need to carefully separate it from the housing, often involving more detailed steps depending on the specific model year.

To replace the daytime running lights on a 2009 BMW X5, first, open the hood and locate the headlight assembly. Disconnect the electrical connector and remove the cover or screws holding the assembly in place, then take out the old bulb. Insert the new bulb, ensuring it is securely in place, and reassemble the headlight unit. Finally, reconnect the electrical connector and test the lights to ensure they are functioning properly.
