My 1987 Mercedes Benz 190e doesn't blow cold air how do check if it is the ac compressor or the freon?
If the system is low on freon the a/c compressor will cycle on and off in short intervals. The compressor is located at the lower driver's side section of the engine. The center of the pulley will move and stop as it cycles. You should be able to hear it cycling also. Since it is an older model car you will probably have to use R12 refrigerant which is not available at most autoparts stores. A qualified technician should be able to recharge your a/c but the problem will most likely persist because of a leak somewhere, either in the lines or the condenser/evaporator.
