Vw passat when the engine is warmed up and idling it has a bit of a tremour and when you start engine sometimes it starts with a bit of a thud any thoughts as to the problem thanx carole?

It sounds like one or more of the engine mounts has weakened or broken. They are rubber engine mounts used to lessen vibration of the engine into the passenger compartment. These mounts can and do fail, especially if you live in a very icy area (the chemicals to de-ice the road damage the mounts) or if you live in an area with wide-ranging weather and you park your car outside in those conditions.
