The warning light will stay on and periodically beep at you if you do not retract the top and hold the button in position long enough to allow the secondary "motor catch" to lock the top in place. When the top retracts it will appear to stop, but then you will hear a different sound as the top then retracts an additional 1-2 inches as it locks into place.
Could it be that the top is not locked down securely.
Probably an air bag sensor warning.
brake pads are low and need replaced
You may have a Mercedes and the trunk warning light has been known to stay on where you can't put the top down. Try opening the trunk and slamming it shut. The problem may be the pneumatic supply pump (PSE) which is supposed to pull the trunk all the way down.

one option is to find the beeping mechanism and simply unplug the wires to it. the beeper should be near the bottom of the steering wheel.

Check the brake fluid level, as on many vehicles the "emergency brake" (in the UK, Hand-brake) warning light also acts as a warning light for low brake-fluid.
To put the top down on a VW Beetle, locate the convertible top release lever, usually found near the windshield or on the dashboard. Pull or push the lever to release the latches. Then, gently pull the top back and guide it into the storage compartment. Ensure the top is fully secured in place before driving.
After looking and consulting with techs, I found the reservoir to be included with the brake system. You should see a separate, unpressurized hose coming off the side (right) that leads down to the master clutch cylinder. This was on a 2004 VW New Beetle convertible.

To reset the oil warning light on a 2008 Chrysler Sebring, turn on the ignition without starting the engine. Slowly push the accelerator down three times. Next, turn the ignition to the lock position and the warning light should be gone.
