When you say sluggish, do you mean it's not running at it's optimum or are you driving really slow? If your car is not running at it's best and it's noticable then you need to address that. The MPG warning light is just letting you know that the onboard computer is not receiving the correct information to display your correct MPG usage (might be directly related to the sluggish performance). Get the car diagnosed and I'm pretty sure you will be able to get an answer.
