Other than a leak. It could be that you need new spark plugs, because it is not enough spark to burn the full mixture, or re-gap them. Also , check your TPS (throttle position sensor. If you mean gas and not petrol. It's more than likely the catalytic converter at fault. It can smell of gas or rotten eggs.
